Meet Daryl Sabara, Young Jewish Star of "Keeping Up With the Steins," a movie about a 13-year-old boy who uses his upcoming bar mitzvah to reconcile the strained relationship between his father and grandfather. Daryl Sabara, who is Jewish, stars as the bar mitzvah boy, Benjamin Fiedler. He's surrounded by an all-star cast (pictured, from left to right), including Jeremy Piven, Jami Gertz, Garry Marshall and Doris Roberts. We interviewed Daryl and his brother, Evan, for BabagaNewz magazine. Here's a sneak peek into the life of this young actor who is now breaking into the Hollywood scene. Baba: Do you want to pursue singing? Daryl: Yeah, I do. I play guitar and piano and I really enjoy it. Baba: What else did you relate to about Benjamin? Daryl: Benjamin and I are pretty different. Benjamin is more paranoid and shy and I’m not. Baba: Favorite scenes? Daryl: I really enjoyed my scenes with Garry Marshall who plays my grandpa. There was one scene in the movie where I was styling my hair and I loved that — it was a half an hour of me messing around with my hair and making funny faces in the mirror. I went wild. Baba: Did you all have as much fun making it as it looked? Daryl: Yeah, it was like a big family on set, and it was during the summer. We hung out, we would go to the movies. We went to "King Arthur" — I went with Carter Jenkins, who plays Zach, Mark John Jefferies who plays Tim, Brittany Robertson who plays Ashley, and Daryl Hannah came, too. Baba: Some kids have trouble making that transition to adult roles and others decide to take time off to go to college. What do you think? Daryl: I want to go to Yale. So I am planning on taking a break for college. I want to study film because I’m interested in being a director as well. When I’m on the set I don’t go back to my trailer. I hang around because I love watching the process. High school is going to come up and all of those experiences, but I know that this is what I really want to do and I’m willing to miss some of those opportunities in order to work. Baba: What’s your next work thing? Daryl: I just finished a pilot for TBS called "Boy’s Life" — that’s the working title. It’s about a 13-year-old boy, Scott Morrow, and his journey through life. Nancy Travis plays my mom. It’s sort of a mix between "The Wonder Years" and "Malcolm in the Middle." It’s set in the present. Baba: Who else is in it? Daryl: Charlie Stewart, who was in "Life With Bonnie," plays my best friend and Vanessa Marano, who is in "Gilmore Girls," plays one of my friends. Chris Kelly, who was in "Wanted," is my rival on the show.
