Makhtesh Ramon
Makhtesh Ramon

Much of the Negev Desert is brown, dry and uninteresting, but it is also beautiful, fascinating and rich in geological history. While this region makes up nearly half of the State of Israel, the population of the desert communities is less than 20 percent of the total. The makhtesh, located about 84 miles south of Beersheva, was not discovered until 1948, because British satellites had not picked it up.
