The Legend of the Baker of Shushan
The Legend of the Baker of Shushan
There is a baker that you may meet
Selling cupcakes and cookies out on the street
And croissants and pastries and doughnuts, too
And as you pass by he calls out to you:
"Get your baked goods here at a really great price
My oven-fresh treats taste oh so nice!
Try my strawberry cakes and my lemony pies
Or, if you have courage, try my Haman Surprise."
"A Haman Surprise?" you think to yourself.
"I don't recall ever seeing one of those on my shelf."
So you reach into your pocket and dig out a dollar
"One Haman Surprise for me!" you holler.
And the baker says to you in a voice that is cool,
"Before you can buy it, I must tell you one rule:
A Haman Surprise must be eaten alone.
Do not open this box until you get home."
You run all the way home with a big appetite
Excited to take that very first bite
Of your Haman Surprise, what a marvelous treat!
You expect it will be the best thing you ever eat!
But when you open the box you can't believe your eyes
When you finally see your Haman Surprise.
And you speak these words as you bring the treat near
"Yuck! This cookie is shaped like an ear!"
