Behrman House Beyond the Classroom
What do Sandy Koufaxthe 1960's star pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgersand 2,000 teenage Jewish athletes have in common? The athletes were gathered in Philadelphia last August to participate in the JCC Maccabi Games, and Koufax is one of the many heroes featured in Jewish Heroes, Jewish Values, our 6th–7th grade textbook about heroic Jews and the values their lives reflected. The athletes each received a specially imprinted copy of the book in their registration kits in August of last year. The inscription on the inside front cover read: "We salute the JCC Maccabi Games' athletes, coaches, families, and friends... for perpetuating Jewish values and helping to create a future generation of Jewish heroes."
The Scholastic Book Clubs, the leading North American children's book club, recently ordered 15,000 copies of Ten Thousand Children, our 4th–5th grade book about the Holocaust, for distribution to school book fairs throughout North America. Ten Thousand Children appeals to children of all religions, recounting the dramatic stories of those who were rescued from the Nazis and safely transported to England in the Kindertransport between December 1938 and September 1939.
