How I Use A Kid's Mensch Handbook
By Nancy Shechter

When I received A Kid's Mensch Handbook on the Golem Plan, the debate about whether to teach mitzvot or middot went out the window. With this beautifully crafted book, we would do both.

The best thing about the book is its relevance to real issues in the lives of our fifth graders, including social pressure, self-respect, and relationships with family and friends. It gives them Jewish responses to their real-life choices. In the words of one of my master teachers, Susan Langer, "it is extremely well written, in a language that the students can make their own. It's non-preachy and sensible. The text is a catalyst for discussion about students' own personal battles with honesty, parents, and the world."

A Kid's Mensch Handbook has inspired several wonderful school programs. For Tu B'Shevat, our fifth graders created a "mensch tree." Using real branches, roots, and bark, the students designed a "tree" that listed the mitzvot and middot that were most important to them.

With Ms Langer's guidance, the fourth graders planned a "mensch fair" and invited the entire school and their families. First, the students read aloud their own interpretation of a mitzvah or middah they had studied. Then guests browsed the "mensch booths," which included the "Generosity Rules" booth, where each guest received a free tee-shirt, compliments of the students' parents. At the "Sh'lom Bayit" booth, students took a survey of which values best create a peaceful home. Of course, each student was polite, smiled, and offered food and hospitality. Just like the menschen they are fast becoming.
