NATE Announces Award Winner

The National Association of Temple Educators has announced that Judith Kuper Jaffe, Principal of Beth Am Temple Religious School in Pearl River, NY, is the winner of the 5765 Behrman House Award—a scholarship of $1,000.

Criteria for receiving the Behrman House Award include: at least two years experience in Jewish education, being a NATE member in good standing, contribution to the advancement of NATE and/or the field of Reform Jewish Education, and pursuit of a course of study in education or Judaic studies. Judy lives in River Edge, NJ with her husband of 26 years, Andy, and daughters, Lisa (24) and Sheryl (21). We recently spoke with her:

Judy, tell us a little about yourself. After teaching religious school for three decades, I became a religious school principal four years ago,

pursuing my Masters in Jewish Studies simultaneously.

What are some of your goals as an educator?
To make Jewish education and identity more than a theoretical activity. I love to see my students participate in practical and active Jewish programs that they will enjoy and remember forever.

What inspired you to submit an application for the Behrman House award?
The advertisement sounded like me. I thought, “Wow, I should apply because this description so aptly fits me right now.”

How did you find out that you were the recipient of the award? I ripped open the envelope, thinking it was just one of the many letters I get daily, and it was the best envelope I ever opened. What a surprise!

How will you use the scholarship?
It will go toward my spring semester at Fairleigh Dickinson University, where I’m pursuing my Masters in Jewish Studies.
