Hebrew for Independent Learners

Do you have students in your Hebrew classes who:
  • Catch on quickly and are ready for more advanced work?
  • Are absent and at risk of falling behind?
  • Enrolled late in the year or enrolled in later grades and are behind the rest of the class?
  • Have a lower level of motivation and/or ability, and would benefit from additional, focused practice of some prayers?
  • Have special needs and work more successfully alone than in a regular classroom environment?
If you’re nodding yes, Self-Guided Hineni can help you. This self-paced Hebrew program allows students to study independently. Students can work alone or in small groups using the Hineni Prayer Booklets. The Self-Guided Hineni manual allows them to correct their own work (with a teacher’s guidance) and to progress at their own pace.

The Self-Guided Hineni manual contains everything students need to use the Hineni Prayer Booklets for individual study: reproducible black-line masters with answer keys, review sheets, and a prayer mastery chart. Everything in the manual can be photocopied so you need buy only one copy for the school.

Here’s how Self-Guided Hineni works:

Sarah completes a Hineni Prayer Booklet (let’s say the Kiddush). Moreh Steve photocopies the answers to the booklet from Self-Guided Hineni and Sarah corrects her own work.

Steve then administers the manual’s review sheet for the Kiddush and, upon completion, Sarah checks her work against an answer key. Finally, Moreh Steve photocopies the Kiddush (the prayer itself) from Self-Guided Hineni and listens to Sarah read or recite the prayer, noting her progress on a prayer mastery chart, also photocopied from Self-Guided Hineni.

I was thrilled to tell parents about this program.
All the prayer booklets and the student’s assessments can be stored in a three-ring binder for easy access and to provide feedback to parents. That’s exactly what Janis Knight, Educator at Temple Beth Torah, Ventura, CA, does. “We also buy divider pockets with spaces for parent material and a special cut in them for CDs of the prayers we want each grade to know. It’s all very convenient and it allows us to show appropriate respect for the words,” writes Janis.

Laura Bramson Hyman, Religious School Principal at Temple Israel of Hollywood, commented about Self- Guided Hineni: “This is fantastic. I just met with a parent who is concerned about her child’s advancement and level of challenge and I was thrilled to tell her about this program.”
