New Hebrew Primer Due from
Behrman House in February
By Terry Kaye
Those of you on the Golem Plan will notice an impressive package in the mail shortly--Shalom Uvrachah-The New Hebrew Primer will be on its way to you in February, along with a full set of support materials.
We're very excited about Shalom Uvrachah. It builds on recent advances in educational theory and our best thinking about how to make a book engaging and interesting for students. Here are some reasons why we think you should give it a very careful look:
- Shalom Uvrachah-The New Hebrew Primer teaches each letter using a carefully chosen cultural vocabulary--words such as mezuzah, mazal tov, aliyah, and lehayyim. (For example, students learn the word havdalah, and then the letter vet.) This methodology provides students with a context for new letters and vowels, and enables them to recall letter-sound and vowel-sound associations by using the cultural words as clues. At the same time, they acquire a vocabulary of 80 important Jewish terms.
- Shalom Uvrachah introduces vowel sounds carefully and systematically, in manageable increments.
- Shalom Uvrachah is the first primer offered in two separate editions--one for print and one for script. All writing and activities are incorporated into the textbook. There's no need to purchase an additional workbook, and your students will have only one book to keep track of as they go to and from school.
- Dare we say how beautiful this book is with its full-color, streamlined design; large trim size; and open, uncluttered feel? We love it, and we think you will too.
- Shalom Uvrachah incorporates a number of technological innovations. It was composed and designed completely electronically. And we've developed special "handwriting fonts" to show students how to form the Hebrew letters.
- For the first time, we've been able to release the book and all of its support material--all of it--at the same time. This way, you can simultaneously evaluate the whole package, including the Teacher's Edition, alef bet flash cards, word cards, and alef bet posters.
