| A Lost-and-Found Story from CAJE |
After a long day in the CAJE exhibit hall, the Behrman House crew stepped out to dinner in the Columbus, OH, neighborhood of German Village. The food was delicious and the company superb, but the hustle and bustle of CAJE left us yawning through dessert. By the time the attendants pulled our various cars around, we were all looking forward to a good night's sleep.
An HUC professor with us for the evening (he asked that his full name not be used, so let's just call him 'Bill Cutter') picked up his car, drove to the hotel, and reached into the back seat to retrieve his briefcase--he needed the materials for his Torah workshop the next morning. But what's this?! Where are the notes on parashat hashavua? Who is Fred Stelson, and why is his ticket for a 7 a.m. flight to New York here? Wait a minute.... that's not Bill's attaché after all! Nor does he recognize the overcoat in the back seat--he didn't bring an overcoat on the trip.
Who could blame poor Bill? He had picked up the rental that morning--how was he supposed to remember what it looked like, especially in the dark? Mr. Stelson, however, was more discerning. As soon as the valet gave him the key to Bill's rental, he knew he was in for a long night. The Great Car Switcharoo had just been discovered, and it would be hours before anyone got any sleep.
After a few panicky phone calls (Bill to Terry Kaye at midnight: "Terry, there's no emergency, but what's the name of the restaurant where we just ate?"), Bill, Fred, and the valet captain untangled this automotive mess. By the following morning, Bill had his car and his Torah workshop notes back, and Fred was on his 7 a.m. flight--with time to spare.
To those joining us at CAJE next year in Long Island: anyone need a ride home?
