Ever wonder what it's like to move a whole business--in one day? Well, we did it. Here's the behind-the-scenes story.
When I left the office, Tony and Bob were there. When I arrived the next morning, Tony and Bob were there. So it was for two weeks before and two weeks after Behrman House moved from crowded quarters in West Orange to deluxe new digs in Springfield.
Like publishing itself, the move was a team effort: David dealt with the contractors, Terry organized the library, Joy remained calm, and Yaffa was cheerful as always. Lori knew where everything was at all times. Odete became "one of the guys" in the warehouse. Abby ordered lunch--no mean feat for 15 people on the move. Jacob contributed wise commentary to the proceedings, not to mention carrying a bunch of stuff.
But Tony and Bob moved mountains--mountains of books, bookshelves, computers, and everything else that makes an office an office.
It's no mystery why we were able to answer phones, take book orders, and edit textbooks the day after the move--hard work by the whole Behrman House team.
Our new building is sunny and bright. It's a colorful place where we create for children, and it's a neat, professional
place where we take our work seriously. The memory of the old building is already fading, but the memory of the
people who worked there and the books they created remains as vibrant as our colorful new conference table. And
tonight, Tony and Bob have finally left for a well-deserved evening of rest.
