Family Education: Shabbat Blessings

Lighting the Shabbat Candles
Sabbath candles may be lit as early as 1¼ hours before sunset, but the usual time is up to 18 minutes before sunset. This is the procedure:

Light the candles.

Move your hands around the flames several times and bring them toward your face. This gesture symbolically welcomes the Sabbath into your home.

Place your hands over your eyes, so that you will not see the Sabbath lights until you have recited the blessing.

Barukh atah, Adonai Eloheinu

melekh ha-olam

asher kidshanu b'mitzvotav v'tzivanu

l'hadlik ner shel Shabbat. [blessing in hebrew]

Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Ruler of the world, who makes us holy with mitzvot, and commands us to kindle the Sabbath lights.

Barukh atah, Adonai Eloheinu melekh ha-olam asher kidshanu b'mitzvotav v'tzivanu l'hadlik ner shel Shabbat.
