Shabbat Blessings
Family Education: Havdalah Service
Blessing over the Havdalah Candle
Then continue with the following blessing:
Barukh atah, Adonai Eloheinu,
melekh ha-olam, borei m'oray ha-esh. |
![]() |
Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Ruler of the world, who creates the lights. |
Next, light the candle, hold it in your right hand, and recite the final prayer, which speaks of Havdalah, separation. The twilight hour has passed. We have crossed the line dividing Shabbat from the rest of the week.
Those who are more fluent in Hebrew may recite a longer version:
Barukh atah, Adonai Eloheinu,
melekh ha-olam, ha-mavdeel bein kodesh l'hol. |
![]() |
Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Ruler of the world, who makes a distinction between sacred and secular. |
Everyone who wants to takes a sip from the cup. Then extinguish the candle in the wine that is on the plate.
Eliyahu Ha-Navi
Finally, Elijah the Prophet is remembered, for he has traditionally symbolized our hope for the messianic age.
