Camp Connection: Our Place in the Universe Helps You Connect Students Back to their Summer Camp Experiences in Nature

Written by Behrman House Staff, 17 of June, 2014

Students are getting ready to go off to summer camp to experience the outdoors, focus on nature and friendships, and immerse themselves in Jewish settings.

Once students return in the fall, you can help them connect their camp experiences in the natural world around with Jewish perspective on the environment and the decisions they make in their daily lives back at home. With the new student journal Our Place in the Universe, your 6-8th grade students can explore connections between what they believe and how they live by looking at environmentalism through a Jewish lens. In chapter 4, for example, your students can discover and discuss the importance of water conservation and how they can do their part.

This innovative program was developed by Dr. Marc Rosenstein, Tova Sacher, and Sigalit Ur, from the Galilee Foundation for Value Education, which uses techniques of informal education to build the Galilee as a model of a civil society.

Using the powerful tool of a reflective journal, this approach uses checklists, personality quizzes, debate topics, and writing prompts to guide learners to develop their own understanding of how the choices we make each day can be influenced by the values we hold as Jews. The materials represent a thought provoking element that adds opportunities for deep reflection to an experiential environmental program.

Your students can deepen their environmental understanding further with the free matching game packThe Our Place in the Universe Game Pack includes crosswords, wordfinds, Mad Libs, and more.
