Educator Resources to Get You Started on Fall Planning

Educators work hard all year long preparing the perfect lesson plans. Why not enjoy the rest of your summer and let us do some of the planning for you?

If you’re thinking about using storybooks this upcoming school year, look no further than ApplesAndHoneyPress.com. Available to every educator is a complimentary teacher resource page for each Apples & Honey Press book, including our new fall releases, that provides a brief summary, learning objectives, sample discussion questions, and educational, kid-friendly activities. Each teacher resource page is written and approved by our very own curriculum consultants, authors, and members of our editorial staff. Here are some samples.

Story Summary: In this playful version of The Little Red Hen, a young girl enlists her animal friends to help make the challah for Rosh Hashanah. Toucan, Parrot, and Hornbill repeatedly make a mess, but soon delicious challah is ready in time for the Rosh Hashanah dinner. The whole neighborhood joins in the holiday celebration, emphasizing the universality of our resolve to build a better world in the new year.

Discussion Question: Can you think of a time you helped a friend to get something done? How about when a friend helped you?

Sample Activity: Create “Welcome” signs. Decorate signs with drawings and stickers. Tape the finished signs to your classroom’s door or send them home with students.

Story Summary: Leah lives high up in an apartment building overlooking the city and dreams of having a sukkah of her own. But there's no place to build it. With help from her friend Ari and some other neighbors, Leah prepares a rooftop sukkah just in time to celebrate Sukkot.

Discussion Question: How can you build better relationships with your neighbors?

Sample Activity: Provide old magazines or print images from Pinterest for students (individually or in small groups) to make a collage of objects they'd like to have in their sukkah.

Story Summary: Children can sing along as they watch a sister, brother, and their animal friends jump, climb, swing, and twirl through each letter. Illustrations are sophisticated and charming, with hidden Hebrew words. Based on the upbeat and charming lyrics of the alef bet song by musicians Mama Doni and Eric Lindberg.

Discussion Question: How does singing a book feel different from reading a book?

Sample Activity: Invite children to shape play dough into the alef bet letters.
