Mezuzah Craft
mezuzah craft

Materials

  • Rectangular jewelry boxes (top and bottom) with batting
  • Items for decorating (glitter, paint, buttons, stickers, interesting paper)
  • Glue (strong, appropriate for cardboard)
  • Kosher mezuzah scroll, rolled correctly in plastic. Note: Ask at your local Judaica store for them to do this part for you--just make sure you know which way is "up!" You can always ask your school's rabbi for assistance.
  • Velcro or double-sided tape

Making the Case

  1. Decorate the top and sides of the box (both pieces, whatever you see when the two pieces are put together).
  2. Place the mezuzah scroll in the jewelry box, making sure the scroll is the right way up. Keep some of the batting inside the box so the scroll won't move around inside.
  3. Carefully glue the two sides of the box together. Don't get any glue on the scroll. Let it dry thoroughly.

Hanging a Mezuzah

  • Use Velcro or double-sided tape to hang the mezuzah.
  • A mezuzah is hung on the doorway to any room of the house, except bathrooms and closets.
  • Hang the mezuzah on the right side of the door frame as you enter the room.
  • Choose a spot two-thirds of the way up the door frame.
  • Tip the top of the mezuzah toward the room you're entering.
  • Before attaching the mezuzah, recite the berakhah (blessing):
