Top Eight Hanukkah Myths
Hanukkah

1 We light a menorah on Hanukkah.

No, silly; we light candles or oil! We use a hanukkiyah, which has nine braches. A menorah has seven branches.

2 The best place to put a hanukkiyah is on a windowsill.

The ideal place to put a hanukkiyah is outside your front door, to the left of the entrance, but most people don't because it's impractical. The windowsill is the second best place.

3 It's best to light candles on Hanukkah.

Olive oil is preferred, but you can light those little, skinny candles that always break.

4 We must light 44 candles during Hanukkah.

Remember, it's preferable to light with olive oil. But people who can't afford to buy many candles are permitted to light one each night, for a total of eight.

5 Hanukkah is a major Jewish holiday.

Despite all the flickering candlelight during Hanukkah, it pales in comparison to Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Pesach, Sukkot, or Shavuot.

6 It's a mitzvah to give gifts on Hanukkah.

In reality, it's a nice custom to give to gifts, but there's no religious mandate to do so.

7 Two of Judah Maccabee's brothers had the same name.

Not quite, but in English, it sounds like they did. Two of his brothers were John and Jonathan, but in Hebrew they were called Yohanan and Yonatan.

8 Jelly donuts are low in carbs.

Now that's a myth we'd love to believe.
