Hebrew in Five Minutes a Day

When Ashley Plotnick, Hebrew School Principal at BJBE, Deerfield, IL ordered 345 sets of Ulpan Alef, we were curious: how was Ashley planning to use the Modern Hebrew folders?

So we asked.

Ashley told us, “We are excited about Ulpan Alef. We will be using it for Bet, Gimel, and Dalet (4, 5, 6th grade) in Hebrew School. The kids will split their time between two teachers — one will be a modern Hebrew specialist and one a tefillah specialist, using the Hineni series.

Some Hebrew teachers had expressed interest in adding a fun component, such as playing Hebrew games, acting out the scenes, etc. There is also interest in focusing on any overlap between Modern Hebrew vocabulary/roots and words the kids will encounter in their prayers.

"We chose Ulpan Alef because it seems fun and accessible. Next year, our Gimel and Dalet kids will move to Ulpan Bet."

Ultimately, the purpose is three-fold: 1) to break up the day and engage the kids in new ways, 2) to have a connection to Israel and an understanding that Hebrew is a living language that exists outside the prayer book, and 3) to allow kids to practice reading and evaluate them in ways other than just prayer repetition, in which some kids memorize the prayer versus learn how to read.

"It is a work in progress so we will see how it goes this year!”

Ulpan Alef helps teach basic vocabulary and sentence structure through engaging cartoons and conversation exercises that every member of your class can enjoy!
