Best Practices for the Online Learning Center: Proven Ideas
Hebrew in Five Minutes a Day

We know that students are more successful learning Hebrew when they also practice a little at home. Here's how one educator encourages them, using the Online Learning Center.

Lynn Calnek, Principal and Director of Life Long Learning at Temple Kol Tikvah in Davidson, NC, teaches 6-10 students who are new to Hebrew, learning the Alef Bet.

"It's hard for me to have tutors for each individual student," Calnek said. "The Online Learning Center gives me a better way to teach these students all together."

The students at Temple Kol Tikvah are currently using the Kol Yisrael series and pre-primer - Ready, Set, Go... Alef Bet!.

"The kids who do their Hebrew homework find they are interested in playing the games because it's a different way of learning."

Calnek has had a 75% letter recognition and prayer reading success rate among her students who practice their Hebrew at home. Hebrew literacy in the school as a whole has also increased.

So how does Calnek do it?

Calnek assesses each 2nd-6th grade child weekly on letter and vowel recognition or reading ability (depending on where they are in their abilities) and they are assessed twice a year on grade appropriate reading.

Every two months she also logs in to every class in the OLC and reviews the automatic assessment and puts the results into her own spreadsheet. Calnek uses the spreadsheet to report the students' progress along with a letter home quoting the school handbook and reminding parents of their signed covenant agreement to assist their children with completing a minimum of 85% of their at-home Hebrew practice

Lynn Calnek has been with Temple Kol Tikvah for seven years. Temple Kol Tikvah was recently awarded the Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte Impact and Innovation Grant helping Calnek use SMART technology to teach her students all together.
