Effective Stories and Storytelling

Books do more than entertain children in between lessons; good books help children consider complexities in life and how they can compare it to their own.

In a recent article from the Center for the Collaborative Classroom, the importance of books in the classroom is clear

The Center for the Collaborative Classroom has a series of considerations for the titles they choose for classroom settings:

  • Are students exposed to a variety of current and classic, high-interest, high-quality children's literature?
  • Does the story represent multi-cultural perspectives?
  • Does the story explore the full range of human  experience and knowledge?
  • Does the story contain relevant social and ethical issues?

Connecting students into Judaism is easy with these Children's books:

It's Too Crowded in Here!

It's Too Crowded in Here! is a collection of Jewish folktales and midrashic stories in this spirit, enlivened by colorful illustrations. While they are fun to simply read aloud with children, the stories also provide a rich yet light-hearted resource for exploring key values such as self respect, compassion, appreciation, tolerance, and thankfulness

Capturing the Moon

Rabbi Ed Feinstein narrates thirty-six classic and modern folktales that transmit our culture, inform our values, and educate our people. Stories take readers from ancient Israel, to the European shtetl, to modern day Israel and America. Each story concludes with questions that explore the story's themes and translate its lesson to the readers' lives.

Three Times Chai

54 rabbis tell their favorite stories -- classic Bible stories, rabbinic and modern commentaries, folktales, and legends. Each story, ranging in length from one to seven pages, reflects a Jewish ideal or value and is told in the individual rabbi's unique speaking style and concludes with a note from the contributor explaining the story's lesson and why it is the rabbi's favorite.
